ALPINE VILLAGE, TORRANCE

ALPINE VILLAGE, TORRANCETorrance, California, a suburb of Los Angeles, lays claim to the "Home of the Oktoberfest", one of biggest and longest in duration, from the 2nd weekend in September thru late October (2006 celebration begins September 9th and ends October 30th).

In 1810, Oktoberfest began with a state fair in Munich, Germany, celebrating the royal marriage of King Ludwig I to Maria of Saxony. The event was dedicated to the Fall harvest including the region's most famous product, beer. The celebration was a big success and Ludwig issued a Decree making Oktober a festival time in Munich. The annual celebration found its way to Torrance, California at its Alpine Village and has been a tradition here for over 30 years. The event draws 100,000 people in an 8-week event and includes fun for the whole family, such as contests like yodeling, wood sawing, cow milking, pretzel eating, beer stein holding and if that isn’t enough there is also the famous chicken dance for everyone to join in. Also lots of food and beer. Room for up to 3,000 people, the beer garden offers a variety of entertainment and fun including German dancers, Oom Pa Pah brass band from Germany, authentic German food and, of course, beer brewed at the Alpine Village. It's the time of year when the Kegs are a tappin' and the Brat is a poppin'.
